Age Grading of Toys

Eric Edmonds is running a mini-theatre session at the Chartered Trading Standards Institute Conference in Bournemouth today to highlight the importance of age grading in the risk assessment of toys. The behaviour of children of different ages, combined with the characteristics of the toy can significantly affect the exposure to chemicals during play activities. Because an age determination for a toy may lack precision due to differences in the way individual children develop, it is important to show how the age grade of the toy was derived by reference to the published guidance such as the US CPSC Age Determination Guidelines or the recently published ISO/TR 8124-8 Safety of Toys: Part 8 Age Determination Guidelines.
